Governor's Message
And as I'm writing this, September has already come, and the chilly winds are already cooling down the evenings, and certainly, bonfires bring up light and warmth, as well as an opportunity to gather with your loved ones and share memories and good stories.
Sharing a good story, I had the opportunity this summer to visit Costa Rica for the third time, to speak at their Internal Medicine meeting and engage with their enthusiastic and highly motivated audience. This gave me energy, inspiration, and their excellent questions and thoughts were inspiring to enhance the content of my presentation. Clearly, the international academic activity offers the opportunity to appraise different perspectives on the approach to common problems, and it is a truly excellent learning experience.
Now, next month, I look forward to the ACP Ohio Annual conference, which promises to be a fantastic one 鈥 with excellent topics and speakers. The scientific committee led by Dr. Kate Schmidt from the University of Cincinnati have put together a truly world-class program. I'm very excited to learn from the different speakers, and from our medical students and residents in their poster's presentation, as well as at the Doctor's Dilemma. It will be again, a fertile platform to share ideas, thoughts and to have discussions about our daily clinical an operational challenges and best ways to solve them. Networking within the state will also allow our colleagues from different institutions to know each other, perhaps find academic opportunities in different places (e.g. Grand Round speaker, mentoring, etc.)
And last, but not least, we are in a very important year for our country. Elections are coming up, and it is fundamental to share our voice. Please register, ask your colleagues and trainees (and patients) to register, and vote. Democracy needs active and proactive participation. We must ensure that the physician workforce is engaged and enthusiastic about the democratic effort.
Within this immediate past statement, I want also to invite all to register at the ACP Advocates for Internal Medicine听which is free and allows you to get notifications about relevant healthcare policy that 口袋女优 is supporting. The platform allows for a very simple and easy way to engage and communicate with your Congress and Senate members.
Also, within this space, I want to share that the ACP can allow its members to write and present their views on specific issues by means of resolutions. Resolutions are ways in which ideas are presented with 鈥榳hereas' and 鈥榬esolve鈥 to allow a formal solution or approach to a specific issue. If you have ideas for resolutions, I will kindly ask you to reach out to me so that we can work together in this. The collective effort always yields better results than the individual one.

The ACP Ohio/US Air Force Chapter Meeting will be held Thursday and Friday, October 17th & 18th, 2024 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio. The full agenda and registration can be found on the Ohio Chapter website.

2nd Annual Story Slam at the Ohio ACP Meeting
Back for a second round, the Ohio ACP Annual meeting will be hosting a Story Slam Event as part of myriad of engagement opportunities offered at the meeting. This event in narrative medicine is related to other similarly themed story-telling activities, are a fantastic way to share the humanity of our profession with one another in a unique and engaging venue. Last year's event was very engaging and very well received by all.
Recognized for several years by the ACP and other chapters, many of these stories have been collected and published on the college website. We are excited to offer a similar opportunity for sharing and are thrilled to invite our chapter members to participate as story tellers and audience members!
Some example stories
The Chapter Meeting Planning Committee cordially invite members to speak, submit their story ideas and participate in this special event on Thursday October 17th at 7 PM. The parameters as a storyteller are simple. Speakers have 5 minutes (6 max) to tell their story about ANYTHING related to their professional life / identity or how their professional life has shaped their personal life or etc. that relates to the theme, which this year is:
鈥淜indness rules! Stories of empathy and kindness in our lives as physicians鈥
Remember, stories ideally contain no no slides or other tech visuals are allowed although props or costumes are permitted. A strict 6-minute cutoff is about the only rule. Following the conclusion of the session, audience voting will determine the 鈥渂est story鈥
If you are interested, please send your story idea or the name of someone that you know may do an excellent job / want to speak to Richard Wardrop, Chair of the ACP Ohio Wellbeing and Professional Satisfaction Committee. Feel free to forward this request as well.

Governor's Advisory Council Updates
During the Town Hall Meeting being held in conjunction with the Annual Scientific Meeting in October, membership will be voting to fill three At-Large positions for the Class of 2027. Varalakshmi Janamanchi, MBBS, FACP, Cleveland Clinic and William 鈥淐had鈥 Cook, DO, MetroHealth have been nominated to fill two of the positions. If you would like to be considered or would like to nominate someone, please send a current CV to Jan Wrassman, Executive Director Nominations will also be accepted from the floor during the Town Hall.

ACP Works with ABIM to Improve Transparency of Exam Refund Policy for Medical Cancellation
As the ABIM initial certification exams are ongoing this month, ACP is happy to report that our advocacy efforts to establish more flexibility with medically required cancellations have resulted in a positive change for our members and other physicians taking the exams. Improved transparency and accessibility of ABIM's medical cancellation policy now should allow for those with unanticipated concerns, including pregnancy/lactation needs that cannot be accommodated by the scheduled testing site, to request a refund that would allow them to reschedule for a later date without financial penalty.
ACP was able to work with ABIM to make this change during August to meet the needs of those physicians who are attempting to achieve initial board certification in 2024. Any person who medically requires cancellation of their exam should follow the ABIM's updated procedures:
- ABIM's cancellations information webpage now includes medical necessity as a reason for consideration of a refund.
- ABIM now also provides an email address to communicate about refund needs, rather than just requiring people to use the generic cancellation form (which does not allow for a medical indication for cancellation).
Please note the time sensitive nature of requesting an eligible refund.
ACP 2025 Health Policy Internship Application Cycle Now Open
ACP is now accepting applications from medical students and residents for the 2025 Health Policy Internship Program, which will take place April 1-April 30, 2025. The ACP Health Policy Internship provides a multifaceted opportunity to learn about the legislative process, health policy, and advocacy in organized medicine.
One resident/fellow and one medical student will be selected to work in ACP's Washington, DC office with governmental affairs and public policy staff. We encourage you to share this opportunity with any students and residents who may be interested. The application closes on October 31, 2024.
